Running on empty

Learning to read the warning lights before the engine stops.

It is nine in the evening and the house is finally quiet. You have answered every message, handled the thing at work, checked on your mother, and made sure everyone else is fine. You sit down. And you feel nothing at all. Not relief. Not a tiredness you can name. Nothing.

If a warning light came on in your car, you would not drive for six months hoping it would go away. You would ask what it meant. Your body has had its light on for a while now, and nobody taught you how to read the dashboard.

Burnout rarely announces itself. In capable people it does not look like collapse. It looks like getting everything done and feeling nothing while you do it.

Rest stops working

You sleep, you take the weekend, and you come back just as empty. Rest that does not restore means your body has not switched off even when you stopped moving. The engine is idling high, burning fuel while parked.

The feeling goes flat

Good news lands behind glass. A win you worked months for barely registers. Your system turned the volume down on everything, because it cannot mute one channel at a time.

Your shortest fuse is at home

You hold it together all day and arrive with nothing left to regulate with. The people who get the sharpest version of you are usually the ones you would protect first.

Small things feel heavy

A short reply you keep not sending. A task sitting on the list for a week. When ordinary things cost more than they should, the fuel is low, not the willpower.

Being the strong one is not a personality. It became a load, and a load that is never shared eventually breaks the person carrying it.
