The distance nobody talks about
The suitcase you never quite unpacked.
You have been here four years now. The flat is warm, the work is good, and last Sunday you stood in a supermarket aisle looking for a spice you cannot get here. You stood there longer than the spice deserved.
There is a suitcase you brought with you. Most of it you unpacked in the first month. Some of it you never opened, because there was no room in the new place, and no words for what was inside.
You did not fail to settle. You have been living beside an unopened suitcase.
The hope of other people
You did not travel alone. You carried the expectations of people who sacrificed for the ticket. Every achievement is partly theirs, and so is every month you cannot send anything home.
The version of you who left
There is a you that stayed the age you were when you boarded. Home still speaks to that person. You have grown past them, and there is rarely a good moment to say so.
The funerals you attended on a screen
You grieved in a room where nobody else was grieving, then logged off and went back to work. There was no gathering, no food, nobody saying his name with you.
The weight that was never yours
Being the one who made it is an honour and a job description. The requests are real. So is the guilt when you cannot meet them.
