When the conversation ends the same way
The loop you are both stuck in, and where to step out of it.
It started with something small. A tone, a forgotten errand, a message left on read. Forty minutes later you are both saying things you have said before, in the same order, with the same ending. By morning it is not mentioned. It waits.
Most couples do not have many arguments. They have one argument wearing different clothes, returning every few weeks. The subject changes. The loop does not.
You cannot win a loop. You can only notice where you stand in it, and step out.
You are not arguing about the dishes
Underneath sits a question: do I matter to you, and can I count on you. That question is what keeps returning, wearing whatever clothes are available that evening.
One moves toward, one moves away
When it gets hot, one pursues for resolution and one withdraws to cool down. Each move makes the other one worse, and neither person is the villain.
Repair matters more than agreement
Couples are not damaged by conflict. They are damaged by conflict that never gets closed, so each round quietly joins a pile nobody names.
The child becomes the messenger
In co-parenting, unfinished conflict travels. Children survive parents who disagree. What shapes them is whether they ever see it repaired.
