The feeling you cannot name

Why the alarm went quiet, and what it was protecting you from.

A friend asks how you are. You say fine, and you are not lying exactly. You genuinely cannot find the word. Later, someone cuts in front of you in traffic and you feel a heat that is far bigger than the traffic.

A smoke detector that will not stop going off is exhausting. So at some point, someone tapes over it. The noise stops. Everyone sleeps. The alarm was never the problem. The alarm was the reason you were still standing.

Numbness and anger are the same story from opposite ends. One is tape over the alarm. The other is the alarm screaming through it.

Grief you had no room for

It arrived in a season when people depended on you. So you put it down, kept moving, and never went back for it.

Anger you were not allowed to have

Toward someone you also love, or depend on, or are supposed to honour. Anger with nowhere to go turns into flatness, or into heat at strangers.

You cannot mute one channel

The same wall that keeps out grief keeps out delight, closeness and relief. People describe it as watching their life from behind glass.

Feeling returns in small doses

You cannot command it any more than you can command sleep. It comes back when noticing becomes survivable again.

Numbness is what happens when feeling everything became more dangerous than feeling nothing.
